Elgin hosted Cycle Oregon 2008 and the participants enjoyed the warm welcome of the community, the awesome scenery along the routes, including spectacular mountain peaks, meandering rivers, and a wide variety of wildlife. You can pick up a local cycling map at the Chamber of Commerce and plan a full or half day trip, there are many routes to choose for both road and mountain biking. Eaglecap Excursion Train

The Eagle Cap Excursion Train is a scenic train that operates on a 63 mile long railroad, linking the communities of Elgin, Wallowa, Enterprise and Joseph in Northeast Oregon. Along the way, the track passes through spectacular roadless areas as it follows the Wild & Scenic Grande Ronde River down stream, then turns up the Wallowa River and across the beautiful Wallowa Valley to the base of the towering Wallowa Mountains.

The track, historically known as the Joseph Branch, is owned by the governments of Wallowa and Union Counties and operated by the Wallowa Union Railroad Authority, which also operates rail freight service on the track.
