Elgin is in northeastern Oregon, approximately 280 miles east of Portland, OR. The driving instructions from Portland are as follows:
- Take I-84 east from Portland for approximately 260 miles.

Go 1.6 miles and turn left on N. McAlister RD./OR-82/Wallowa Lake Hwy.
